Abstract

The current status of the Model Driven Architecture in OMG is coined to a large extent by a number of distinct technologies and standards, which are loosely coupled together. The MDA aware reader, although able to find the relevant information, is mostly left alone to decide which technologies and standards to combine and use in order to apply the MDA in certain field.

The relationship of the ingredients (technologies and standards) of the MDA is not directly evident to a systems architect or an applications designer in a specific domain. While this target groups for the MDA approach is expected to benefit most, there is no complete or consistent methodology that can be followed for an MDA-compliant development.

This document makes a first step to identify the relationships and dependencies between the technologies and standards and to define the core ingredients that could lead to a deployable model driven architecture. Having identified individual steps, i.e. methods, rules, best practices etc., a methodology has to come as a result of practices which have been proved to be successful, and applied in a sufficiently wide variety of use cases.

The second step, i.e. the definition of the methodology as a set of practices, procedures and rules will be consolidated after the identified methods in this document are consolidated taking into account the experience and feedback from the implementation of the MODA-TEL use cases. The result of this consolidation will be reported in a future revision of this document.
